Check fit and room for layers
A shell can be built for layering and still be wrong for your body. Use the size chart that belongs to the exact garment cut, then check movement and cuff, hem and hood coverage while wearing the layers you expect to use. We do not substitute a customer-review impression or an image model's proportions for your own fit check.
Use body measurements, not a vague size conversion
Patagonia's size guide provides separate men's, women's and gender-inclusive paths. Its men's and women's tops guidance says to use body measurements and identifies chest as a usual predictor for tops, with a note to consider the hips if that measurement is larger. Start with the chart and exact size range on the current product page; do not assume the same letter in two fit blocks has the same measurements.
Test the movement you need
When you can try a jacket on, wear the layers you will really use. Reach forward, raise your arms, bend, sit and turn your head. Check whether sleeves still cover your wrists, the hem stays where you need it, and the hood adjusts over the headwear you plan to use. This is a practical home fit check, not a universal measurement or a claim that an online assessment can certify a fit.
Read “regular fit” narrowly
The two Torrentshell pages both call their cut regular. That does not establish a particular ease measurement or prove how a sweater, fleece or pack shoulder straps will feel underneath. A shell-only jacket also does not supply insulating warmth; layer it with clothing suitable for the conditions, or assess a genuinely insulated alternative if built-in warmth is essential.
Keep two related cuts separate
Patagonia identifies the men's Torrentshell as style 85241 and the women's Torrentshell as style 85246. Both are listed as regular fit, but the brand maintains separate charts and style numbers. The listed weights also differ: 400 g for 85241 and 352 g for 85246. Do not treat that difference as proof that one cut fits better or performs better.
