Care for a waterproof shell by its exact label

Care instructions can vary with fabric, membrane, finish and garment generation. Start with the label attached to the exact jacket and the current official model page. Do not infer that a maintenance step for one brand or version applies to every rain shell.

Instructions listed for the reviewed Torrentshell styles

The manufacturer page for both reviewed models says to machine wash cold, do not bleach, tumble dry low, cool iron, do not steam and do not use fabric softeners. Check the sewn-in label on the garment you receive and confirm that it corresponds to the style and color; an older jacket or alternate version may have different instructions.

Separate cleaning from a repair or finish question

If a jacket leaks, wets out, has a damaged seam or has been altered, a wash routine alone does not diagnose the cause. We have not tested fabric finishes or water resistance, and the current product pages do not promise a specific number of wash cycles. Ask the manufacturer about the exact problem and version before applying a treatment or assuming it restores performance.

Use a simple ownership record

  • Keep the style number, purchase record and care label together.
  • Note what cleaning products and settings you used, following the garment's own directions.
  • Inspect the hood, cuffs, hem, zipper coverings and visible seams after use; stop before a small problem becomes an unrecorded repair.
  • Check the current manufacturer's repair guidance for a specific damage before sewing, sealing or treating a technical shell.

For this pair, see the care sections on Patagonia's 85241 page and 85246 page. Those are product-specific instructions, not general directions for other brands.
